The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area Development Zone (ATHADZ) is a tax credit program intended to boost economic development within the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area. The program is directed at small businesses (fewer than 20 employees) that make use of the natural, cultural and historic assets of the Heritage Area. This program addresses two of the major goals outlined in the management plan: Expand Economic Opportunity, and Increase Community Capacity. The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area Development Zone is unique in the country, and may serve as a model for other heritage areas nationwide.
There are two tax credits available for heritage-based cottage industries within the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area. These credits are for 5 years, and unused credits may be carried forward up to 10 years.
The Heritage Small Business tax credit offers a state income tax credit of up to $1,500 per year to qualifying businesses.
The New Employee tax credit offers an additional state income tax credit of up to $1,500 per year to qualifying businesses that have net new hires of one full-time or two part-time employees.
Workshops are available to business or community groups upon request. Please visit the "Workshops" section to request a workshop to be held in your area.
