The Heritage Area Management Plan
In 1997 the Atchafalaya Trace Commission was created by the Louisiana Legislature. The Commission was charged with planning and managing the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area to help our communities save important cultural and natural resources, tell our stories, enhance the positive benefits of tourism, and create a sustainable, healthy economy.

The Commissioners, in partnership with a diverse Advisory Board, worked for more than sixteen months, assisted by the Heritage Area's staff at the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism and a nationally experienced team of planners, economist, historians and conservationists, to frame a clear strategic direction for the Heritage Area.
