What is Juneteenth?

On September 22, 1862, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The proclamation established that all enslaved people would be free, but ultimately it took much longer to right the wrongs of slavery. It wasn’t until June 19, 1865, nearly two year later, when General Gordan Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas with federal orders that the last remaining enslaved people were emancipated.
