Vermilionville hosts monthly workshops that allow participants to learn different Acadian, Creole and Native American crafts from master artisans on the first Saturday of every month. Topics include woodcarving, textiles, foodways and more.
This month Vermilionville's resident naturalist Greg Guidroz will offer a workshop on wine making. Did you know that all fruits grown in the wild contain on their outer skin the natural yeast needed to convert the fruit’s sugars into delicious wine? In this class, Greg will guide you through your first batch of homemade wine. The cost of the class is $90, which includes your own personal complete home brew kit with all of the tools and supplies to begin your first batch and to continue in the art of home brewing. Advance registration is required and limited to 12 participants. For more information, contact Brady McKellar at 337-233-4077 or vville@bayouvermiliondistrict.org.
ABOUT THE ARTISAN
Greg was born and raised in the Atchafalaya swamps near Henderson and Breaux Bridge. He learned early in life how to pilot watercraft, so piloting boats is second nature to him. Greg has worked for the Bayou Vermilion District under many different titles, initially as a member of the Bayou Operations Crew, and later at Vermilionville, where he served as both captain and interpreter on our hand-made wooden bateaux, "Cocodrie." He has also served as the gardener, growing sugar cane and several types of vegetables common to the region. He draws on his personal experiences as a Cajun naturalist and storyteller when narrating. Currently, Greg serves as the Bayou Vermilion District's Recreation and Education Coordinator, managing Vermilionville's watershed exhibit and its employees, making presentations at local schools on the importance of recycling, leading weekend canoe paddle lessons and trips and organizing a recycle bin loan program to local festivals and other events. Greg also spent a two-year stint as a pilot of a 30-foot work barge, is an experienced canoe instructor and recipient of the Red Cross small boat rescue training.
