The Baton Rouge Chapter of the Louisiana Archaeological Society presents Louisiana's Yellow Gold by Murphy Painter Wednesday, May 31, at 7 p.m. at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library.
Many movies and stories have been told about the time of ultimate manifest destiny in the U.S., when gold and silver were discovered out west. Unheralded in folklore but just as dramatic and at the same time, gold was discovered in Louisiana. Louisiana "Gold" was its virgin red cypress swamps. However, there are few stories about it or the ghost towns left in its wake. This presentation will cover a time in the state when Louisiana "Yellow Gold" was the main economic engine in the state and maybe the world.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Murphy J. Painter is an historian from Ascension Parish. He earned a bachelor's degree in law enforcement and a master's in public administration, both from LSU. Murphy has been a true-life "who dun it" investigator with more than 40 years of experience in law enforcement. He also served 15 years as head of the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control. His grandparents were employees in the Louisiana cypress lumber boom at the beginning of the 20th century.
