Shop for local, home-grown produce at the Opelousas Farmers' Market. Opelousas, Louisiana is a major agricultural community, known in the mid 20th Century as the "Yam Capital of the World".
Today you can still try an Opelousas sweet potato and even take home some collards and mustard greens, kale, carrots, honey, and squashes when in season. The Farmer's Market is open throughout the year every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. In the spring and fall, local farmers gather in the evening for a special concert, Music & Market, featuring Cajun and zydeco music bands.
