Carl Westmoreland is the Senior Historian from the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center (NUGRRFC) in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Freedom Center is the first institution in the nation dedicated to the secret network of escape where tens of thousands of people risk their lives in search of freedom. Many of these fugitives followed and crossed the Mississippi River through dangerous terrain into Free States. Westmoreland will share his fifty years of research about the Underground Railroad in a presentation entitled "Freedom on the Mississippi River".
Westmoreland was a key leader behind the creation of The Freedom Center and the curator responsible for saving the slave pen that he discovered, restored, and had installed within the walls of the museum. He was the first African American to serve on the National Trust for Historic
Preservation where he traveled the world speaking about preservation issues.
This is the first in a series of programs planned in conjunction with a new exhibition, Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad, which runs through May 26, 2019.
