This family-friendly program presented by Gaynell Brady, founder of Mammy’s, a traveling enrichment program. Thousands of Freedom Seekers found their way to liberty after escaping through the Underground Railroad. Learn about the many ways Mammy served as a Conductor on the Underground Railroad. This program will include storytelling, a scavenger hunt to collect goods around the museum complex, and crafts to create an engaging and deep experience for families. This 60-minute program is perfect for ages 6 and up.
Mammy’s brings interactive history lessons relevant to Louisiana and American History where participants learn about the lives of Louisiana's Mammies. In 2007, Gaynell began researching her family tree. Through genealogical research, evidence revealed her family has lived in Louisiana for over 200 years. In fact, she has roots in West Baton Rouge Parish. After careful analysis of her family tree, she noticed there was one theme that was prevalent among all of her mammies—the desire to make each generation stronger and smarter. The inspiring stories of her mammies left her with a sense of pride, strength, and courage.
Mammy and the Underground Railroad is being offered in conjunction with the national traveling exhibit from Exhibits USA, Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad that will be on display at the West Baton Rouge Museum through May 26, 2019.
