Howe Institute Marker Unveiling and Symposium

The Iberia African American Historical Society will unveil a state historical marker at the Iberia Parish Courthouse (300 Iberia St., New Iberia). The marker will commemorate Howe Institute, one of the early Iberia Parish Schools for Blacks, and Booker T. Washington’s historic visit to Howe Institute. The program includes a keynote by Dr. Michael Bieze, a premier art historian and Booker T. Washington scholar; lunch; original painting auction; presentation by Dr. Tiffany Caesar, current Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Visiting Scholar at Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University; live music; and unveiling ceremony. Event is free but registration is requested to attend the lunch.
